A Confederacy of Dunces — 1987, by John Kennedy Toole

Published posthumously (suicide) after his mother found the manuscript in the attic, it tells the story of an arrogant yet hilarious hot dog vendor living in New Orleans.

Lord of Light — 1967, by Roger Zelazny

A mildly sci-fi tilt on the Gods from the Hindu Pantheon.

Shantaram — 2005, by Gregory David Roberts

Coming in at 944 pages, not for the light reader. The story follows a New Zealand prisoner who escapes to India and falls in with love the locals, and eventually the criminal elements of Mumbai. Deep in spirituality and wisdom.

Survivor — 2010, by Chuck Palahniuk

Along with Confederacy of Dunces, one of the funniest books I have ever read. The main character escapes a cult and becomes a multimedia messiah.

The Contortionist’s Handbook — 2003, by Craig Clevenger

The protagonist comes from a broken family, does a lot of drugs, and mostly forgets everything that happens to him.
