The thing about artists like Jackson Pollack and Mark Rothko is that their paintings are not really that interesting. Rothko's are downright boring.

What they did, however, is come up with something new, regardless if it's great art or not. In my opinion neither qualify as great art. But they are unique.

There's the rub.
